introduction
When Alfred Nobel died on December 10, 1896, it was discovered that he had left a will, dated November 27, 1895, according to which most of his vast wealth was to be used for five prizes, including one for peace.
According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize shall be awarded to the person who :
“ ...shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses ‘’
The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by a committee of five persons who are chosen by the Norwegian Storting (Parliament of Norway), Oslo, Norway.
Alfred nobel
Alfred Bernhard Nobel (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈɑlfred noˈbɛl] About this sound listen (help•info); 21 October 1833 – 10 December 1896) was a Swedish chemist, engineer, innovator, and armaments manufacturer. He was the inventor of dynamite. Nobel also owned Bofors, which he had redirected from its previous role as primarily an iron and steel producer to a major manufacturer of cannon and other armaments. Nobel held 350 different patents, dynamite being the most famous. He used his fortune posthumously to institute the Nobel Prizes. The synthetic element nobelium was named after him. His name also survives in modern-day companies such as Dynamit Nobel and Akzo Nobel, which are descendants of or mergers with companies Nobel himself established.
the noble prise of peace
Alfred Nobel was interested in social issues and was engaged in the peace movement. His acquaintance with Bertha von Suttner (who was later awarded the 1905 Nobel Peace Prize) influenced his own views on peace. Perhaps his peace interest was also because his inventions were used in warfare and assassination attempts? Peace was the fifth and final prize area that Nobel mentioned in his will.
The condition to deliver a noble prise :
Nominations
Nomination forms are sent by the Nobel Committee to about 3,000 individuals, usually in September the year before the prizes are awarded. These individuals are often academics working in a relevant area. For the Peace Prize, inquiries are sent to governments, members of international courts, professors and rectors, former Peace Prize laureates and current or former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The deadline for the return of the nomination forms is 31 January of the year of the award. The Nobel Committee nominates about 300 potential laureates from these forms and additional names. The nominees are not publicly named, nor are they told that they are being considered for the prize. All nomination records for a prize are sealed for 50 years from the awarding of the prize.
Selection
The Nobel Committee then prepares a report reflecting the advice of experts in the relevant fields. This, along with the list of preliminary candidates, is submitted to the prize-awarding institutions. The institutions meet to choose the laureate or laureates in each field by a majority vote. Their decision, which cannot be appealed, is announced immediately after the vote. A maximum of three laureates and two different works may be selected per award. Except for the Peace Prize, which can be awarded to institutions, the awards can only be given to individuals If the Peace Prize is not awarded, the money is split among the scientific prizes. This has happened 19 times so far
Mohamed ElBaradei
Activist / Political Figure
Born: 1942
Birthplace: Cairo, Egypt
Best known as: The Egyptian winner of the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize
Mohamed ElBaradei won the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons -- and six years later was thrust into the public eye as the face of the Egyptian uprisings of 2011. Mohamed ElBaradei was a slightly unusual figure for a revolutionary: he studied law at the University of Cairo (graduating in 1962) and then spent years as a diplomat in the Egyptian government, working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (starting in 1964) and then at Egypt's mission to the United Nations. He joined the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 1984, and over the next 13 years rose to the position of director general of the entire agency. He held that post from 1997-2009, during which time he both worked with and clashed with the American administration of George W. Bush, particularly over the alleged threats of "weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq and Iran. Mohamed ElBaradei and the IAEA were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for their work "to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is used in the safest possible way." He returned to Egypt in 2009, where he joined the tens of thousands who flooded the streets of Cairo in 2011, calling for the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak. "You are the owners of this revolution. You are the future," he told protesters during one gathering in Tahrir Square.
