Noah Idechong was named “Hero for the Planet” by Time Magazine in 2000. He was born in 1953
in a fishing village in Palau, an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, east of the Philippines.
Palau is home of one of the richest coral reefs in the world. Over 1,400 species of fish make it one
of the most biologically rich marine areas on earth.
However, these important resources are threatened by the growth in tourism and the number of foreign
investors rushing to exploit the area.
In 1994, Noah founded the Palau Conservation Society, a non-governmental organization dedicated
to protecting the environment. Since then, this organization has established conservation areas, helped
develop new fishing regulations and worked with local fishermen to rediscover traditional fishing
methods.
Much of marine population has now recovered, bur Noah is still looking for new ways to help
Palauans meet their economic needs while protecting biodiversity.
