From the Earth, the most splendid object to be seen in the entire night is the moon. Men has worshipped it as a goddess and attributed magical properties to its light. It is relatively insignificant body of the solar system; a mere satellite of the Earth, shinning only by reflecting sunlight. Although the moon cannot be considered as larger or important body within the entire solar system, it is unusual satellite, being very large compared with its planets. No other planet has a satellite of that size. Some of the satellites of Jupiter; Saturn and Neptune are larger in diameter than the Moon, but these are not large when compared with the size of the giant planets around which they revolve.
At one time some astronomers though that the Moon was originally part of the Earth. A huge chunk of the Earth was supposed to have broken away and formed the moon, leaving a great scar on the Earth’s surface that becomes the Pacific Ocean. There is little evidence to support the theory of the Moon’s origin. Now most Astronomers believe that the Moon is not Known. Probably the Moon came to existence at the same time and the same way as the Earth. There is also the possibility that it was elsewhere in the solar system and later captured by the Earth.
